In June 2025, it was reported that 15 Indian workers from Jharkhand have been subjected to wage theft for three months, which has left them unable to afford basic necessities, including food and water. Unable to afford rent, their landlord has disconnected the water supply and served them with an eviction notice.
The workers were employed by India-based utilities firms Masai Contracting to lay transmission lines. The Indian Express contacted the employer for comment; it did not respond.
The workers have called for support from the Indian government.
