On 7 April 2025, Forum Independen Pelajar West Papua (FIP) a student movement, staged a protest in Nabire, Central Papua, demanding for the closure of PT Freeport and other extractive industries, denounced the militarisation of West Papua, and demanded the right to self-determination for the Papuan people. They met with police violence, tear gas, arrests, and forced dispersals. Nine student members sustained injuries, and 7 of them were arrested by Nabire police forces.
