Freeport McMoRan's response to allegations of nitrogen oxide emissions

"Our goal is to conduct our mining and processing operations in a manner that minimizes adverse impacts on the environment and supports the protection of the ecosystems where we operate through responsible environmental stewardship. We review and evaluate the environmental effects of our activities throughout the mining and processing life cycle, and we plan and conduct our operations in a manner that seeks to optimize the economic use of resources while minimizing adverse environmental effects, with a focus on climate, water, biodiversity, air, tailings, waste, mine closure and reclamation. We aim to respect the interests of all stakeholders in our environmental performance and are committed to supporting meaningful involvement through collaborative engagement with our stakeholders regarding our environmental performance.

For our largest open pit mine sites like Morenci, where efficiency of movement is critical as ore grades decline, we are investing in larger ultra-class haul trucks capable of carrying approximately 150 tons more per load compared to the existing fleet. With ultra-class trucks, we have the opportunity to reduce congestion, increase haulage efficiencies and ultimately deliver more pounds of copper per day. These steps all lead to a reduction in the amount of NOx emissions for each ton of ore moved. In addition, the power train in these diesel-electric trucks provides a platform for conversion to Dynamic Energy Transfer (DET) or fully electric haul trucks in the future."
