In July 2026, it was reported that 'unprecedented' flooding in Assam, India, had submerged tea gardens, resulting in workers' quarters, hospitals and schools inundated with floodwaters, and transport routes disrupted. Bamonpookrie Tea Estate in Sivasagar district was reported to be among the worst-hit.

Due to the flooding, thousands of tea workers and their families have been forced to leave their homes and take shelter in factory buildings, managers' bungalows and other elevated structures.

At one tea estate, a pregnant worker delivered her baby inside the factory, as the heavy flooding made it difficult to reach a hospital in time.
