Indonesia: Raja Ampat communities & protected areas continue to face threats from mining & gas operations, incl. cos. responses & non-responses

Greenpeace Indonesia activists staged a peaceful, non-violent protest during the opening of an international auto show conference in Tangerang on 30 July 2026.

Greenpeace Indonesia's latest report entitled 'Unprotected Paradise' reveals new affiliated companies linked to PT Gag which continues operating in Raja Ampat despite environmental failures based on the Environment Ministry-mandated audit. The report also alleges gas & oil companies operating in areas overlapping with UNESCO biosphere reserve. Finally, the report also alleges a company whose permit was revoked last year but has yet to conduct restoration, urging the government to disclose its assessment of restoration efforts by all companies in Raja Ampat and to strictly enforce restoration regulations.

In August, Business and Human Rights Centre invited PT Aneka Tambang (Antam); PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP); Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co, Ltd.; Zhenshi Group; Shanghai Decent Investment Co. Ltd.; Zhejiang Huajun Investment Co. Ltd.; PT Yashi Indonesia Investment; PT Skybrightness Metal Industry; PT Lipe Metal Industry; PT Universal Metals Investment; Tsingshan Group; Ever Rising Limited; T&J Industrial Holding Limited; PT Youshan Nickel Indonesia; Chengtun Mining; Toyota; Hyundai Motor Group; BYD; Mont D’or Salawati Ltd; Criterium Energy; Petrogas Ltd; PT Anugerah Surya Pratama (ASP); PT Wanxiang Nickel Indonesia; and Wanxiang Group to respond to allegations.

Hyundai responded but the others did not. PT Yashi Indonesia Investment, PT Skybrightness Metal Industry, PT Lipe Metal Industry, PT Universal Metals Investment, PT Youshan Nickel Indonesia, Ever Rising Limited, T&J Industrial Holding Limited, and PT Anugerah Surya Pratama (ASP) could not be reached.
