A lawsuit was filed in Argentina against Rockhopper Exploration and Navitas Petroleum for their proposed Sea Lion oil and gas project near the Falkland Islands. The plaintiffs, the Argentine Association of Environmental Lawyers and the Malvinas Islands La Plata Ex-Combatants Center, argue that the project lacks an environmental impact assessment and environmental authorization from Argentina. The project, approved by the Falkland Islands government, involves 23 wells and offshore infrastructure, posing risks to sensitive marine ecosystems and species such as fish, whales, sea lions, penguins, orcas, and dolphins. The lawsuit also asserts that the project violates the rights of nature and threatens sites where Argentine soldiers died during the 1982 war with Great Britain. The plaintiffs seek to block financial transactions linked to the project, arguing that investors are engaged in illegal activity under Argentine law.
