“Tía María: Farmers from Arequipa seek to suspend mining project through a precautionary measure,” October 27, 2025

At a press conference, community leader Miguel Meza described the Executive Branch’s decision as an “imposition,” arguing that it failed to respect the overwhelming rejection expressed by the population since 2009, when a popular consultation was held in six districts of Islay. He further recalled that, to date, no government representative has approached the population of the Tambo Valley to engage in dialogue...

Other representatives from the Tambo Valley also participated in the press conference, including Agripina Páucar, Paulina Bobadilla, and Vilma Bobadilla. They warned that the Tía María project poses a risk of contamination to their agricultural environment and cautioned about potential damage to the fragile ecosystem of the Lomas de Cachendo.
