We have continuously communicated that the claims put forward by MACUA and other civil society organisations that Anglo American is exiting South Africa are false and irresponsible; and risk misleading the public.

The merger with Teck Resources is about building a stronger global critical minerals company that is even better positioned to invest and grow, including in South Africa. Anglo Teck (the new merged company) will continue Anglo American’s listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) as a very much larger global company, providing direct investment access for our substantial shareholder base in South Africa. In fact, over and above the significant investments we make into South Africa already, we have committed to contributing R600m to bolster the Junior Mining Exploration Fund in partnership with the IDC and the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) as part of the merger; while also supporting the development of a global critical minerals institute involving institutions from the world’s great mining countries, including South Africa.
