USA: Settlement reached in lawsuit against First Pick Farms over alleged human trafficking and exploitation of Mexican migrant workers

Blueberries

In June 2023, it was reported that a lawsuit had been filed against First Pick Farms in Michigan, USA, alleging that the company had engaged in human trafficking. According to the complaint, two men, along with 30 other workers, all on H-2A visas, were coerced into boarding vans from North Carolina to Michigan in June 2017, and forced to work on a blueberry farm owned by First Pick Farms. The two men were allegedly given false identification and threatened with deportation if they complained or attempted to leave.

The workers were allegedly paid a piecemeal rate of approximately 50 cents per pound of blueberries, required to pay $25 a week for housing, which they reported to be unsafe, and worked long hours.

In July 2026, it was reported that the lawsuit was settled, though details were kept confidential.
