Indonesia: Survey with workers from 10 IMIP factories reveals serious shortfalls in occupational safety; cos did not respond

In the report Use It FIrst, Accident Later: Neglect, Compromises in OHS Standards, and Worker Fatigue behind the High Occupational Accident Rate in the Morowali Nickel Industry released by FPE KSBSI, based on first-hand survey and interview data, Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) is alleged of systemic occupational health and safety (OHS) failures in Morowali, Indonesia, including normalization of unsafe practices, use of damaged equipment, inadequate PPE, hazardous work environments, and excessive working hours. IMIP is further alleged of failing to adequately protect women workers’ rights First-hand interviews describe heightened risks of sexual harassment during night shifts and unsafe commuting conditions. Additional concerns include lack of appropriate PPE for pregnant workers.

Surveyed workers in the report includes employees from PT Dexin Steel Indonesia, Indonesia Ruipu Nickel and Chrome Alloy, PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITSS), PT Qing Feng Ferrochrome, PT Sulawesi Mining Investment, PT. QMB New Energy Materials, Indonesia Guang Ching Nickel And Stainless Steel Industry and PT Risun Wei Shan Indonesia. The Business and Human Rights Centre had reached out to the owner companies of the above factories for comment. They had not responded.
