Myanmar: Over 50 reportedly fell victim to employment scam on TikTok; incl. company non-response

A Mizzima report on 16 March 2026 indicated that an online scammer operating through a TikTok account named “Hein Htet” allegedly defrauded more than 50 people from Upper Myanmar by advertising high-paying job opportunities in China. According to the report, the scammer persuaded victims to send money via K-pay for supposed passport processing and travel arrangements, then instructed them to travel towns near the Chinese border. The scammer would reportedly cut off all contact, leaving them stranded without employment or support. Sources indicate that many of those targeted were economically vulnerable, including individuals believed to be internally displaced persons.

The Business and Human Rights Centre has reached out to TikTok. TikTok declined to comment.
