Myanmar: Leader and several members of Solidarity Trade Union of Myanmar arrested and faced unknown charges as crack-down on civil society remains
Myanmar's military junta has reportedly arrested prominent union leader Myo Myo Aye and five other labour rights activists in a coordinated crackdown that has drawn international condemnation. All six detainees allegedly face arbitrary detention on undisclosed charges, with no access to legal representation.
These arrests reflect a broader pattern of persecution against Myanmar’s labour movement since the junta seized power in February 2021, with union members and civil society groups facing raids, violence and arbitrary detentions.
More than 25 international human rights organisations have issued a joint statement demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees, and calling for respect of labour rights defenders' fundamental freedoms of expression, association and assembly.
