Indonesia: Workers at PT GCNS and PT ZTE facilities in Morowali Industrial Park died of accident, report says

On the morning of May 13, 2025, a Chinese worker tragically died while conducting furnace repairs at PT GCNS (Indonesia Guang Ching Nickel and Stainless Steel Industry) in Morowali, Indonesia. [...] The worker was electrocuted when conducting repairs and was rushed to the nearby medical clinic but unfortunately passed away before arrival.

The electrical panel was not shut off when the worker undertook furnace repairs, creating a high risk of electrocution and electrical arcs. Electrical arcs can cause severe burns, blindness and in some cases, explosions.

Just two days later, on May 15, an Indonesian worker employed at PT ZTE, died whilst cleaning his dump truck. The worker was a nickel ore dump truck operator and was cleaning the truck in an area flooded by rainwater when he was electrocuted by an exposed electrical cable. PT ZTE is also located within IMIP.
