Cleaners at EY—formerly Ernst and Young—one of the biggest consultancy firms in the world, are fighting to save their jobs.

The company, which makes tens of billions, is threatening to slash more than a third of cleaners’ jobs at its London offices.

The average EY partner takes home £723,000 a year, while paying migrant workers who clean their buildings just £13.85 an hour.

EY keeps the cleaners, who are members of the IWGB union, on worse terms and conditions than the rest of their workers by hiding behind a subcontractor, Mitie.

Mitie announced a wave of redundancies last month in order to be “more efficient for the client”...

…“It is always the cleaning subcontractors that they hit hard. They don’t make cuts in the same way to other areas.”…

...cleaners are “already paid poverty wages”. “Now the cleaners who remain will have to do much more work. And these outsourcing companies make millions from migrant workers,” he said.

And bosses have been “harassing workers about whether they are going to strike or not”. “It is unacceptable.”

Bosses have used tactics to scare workers, such as offering them more money to work overtime and sending a letter to intimidate them that they will lose wages and pension contributions...
