The European Commission will only establish a register for riskier AI systems – required under the EU’s AI Act – later next year.

Under the law, companies must register AI systems used in “high-risk” sectors – such as schools, law enforcement or for the management of workers – in a central EU database before switching them on. But it appears the step has been pushed until the second half of 2027...

...The delay is particularly noteworthy as recent revisions to the AI Act, under the Commission’s Digital Omnibus, have scrambled the legal timeline for when companies are supposed to start registering high-risk systems....But the package did not move a separate, standalone article setting out the duty to register, which the summary article also refers to. Given this separate article was not itself pushed back, it could imply that companies do still need to register by 2 August 2026...
