Ecuador: Proposed oil project supported by Chuanqing Drilling Engineering criticised over alleged lack of transparency on water use and environmental risks; company did not respond

Ecuador’s state-owned oil company Petroecuador announced in May 2026 that it would use hydraulic fracturing technology to extract oil from limestone reservoirs in Oil Block 57 in the Amazon rainforest-covered province of Sucumbíos, with support from service provider CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company Limited. According to a news report published in May, The Ecuadorian representative of Wildlife Conservation Society had stated that while the government has frequently used hydraulic fracturing in recent years to extract residual oil from mature wells, information disclosure had been lacking in transparency on water usage, water sources, groundwater contamination risk assessments, or specific measures to mitigate environmental risks for these projects.

Business and Human Rights Centre had reached out to CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company Limited for comments. They did not respond.
