In December 2025, it was reported that “networks of human traffickers” are recruiting Nepali workers to Greece with promises of high earnings, only for workers to arrive to conditions of exploitation planting strawberries.

One trafficker allegedly recruited workers to Greece via Facebook and TikTok, charging those workers EUR3,500 per person which she then deducted from their wages. One undocumented worker recruited by this agent alleges that after arrival he was given a job different to that promised, was paid only EUR5 an hour, and was subjected to “extremely hard” work eight hours per day, without holidays.

The article also highlights how Greek police have been raiding agricultural farms over allegations of abuse, including one case where 25 Nepali workers were found at one farm in conditions of debt bondage, where they were subjected to violence.

In January 2026, the Business & Human Rights Centre invited Meta and TikTok to respond to the article, and to outline how they monitor and remove content leading to the recruitment of Nepali workers to Greece in exploitative conditions. Meta and TikTok’s responses can be read in full below.

In February 2026, an investigation by Solomon shed light on new cases of Nepali migrant workers contacted via WhatsApp and TikTok to work on farms in Greece. One of the workers was allegedly working for Taktikos Fruits in a strawberry field in Manolada, a leading strawberry wholesale company in Greece. The company did not respond to the request for comment from the journalists. Another worker was contacted via TikTok to work on an onion farm where he endured egregious labour abuses.
