S. Korea: While total workplace deaths hit record low, manufacturing sector fatalities soar 79% in first quarter of 2026

Despite an overall downward trend in fatal occupational accidents in the first quarter, the labour authorities have launched inspections following a rise in crush and entrapment accidents in the manufacturing sector.

According to supplementary statistics in the Ministry of Employment and Labour's Q1 2026 industrial accident report, the number of people killed in accidents stood at 113 by March, down 24 (17.5%) from the same period of the previous year (113). The figure represents the lowest first-quarter total since the statistics were first compiled; fatal accidents numbered 98 cases — a decrease of 31 (24.0%) from the 129 cases recorded in Q1 of the previous year.
In the manufacturing sector, however, accident fatalities surged to 52 — up 23 (79.3%) from 29 a year earlier. Fatal accident cases numbered 39, likewise up 10 (34.5%) from the same period of the previous year (29 cases).
