PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) was formally established on 3 October 2013 during the Indonesia–China Bilateral Forum attended by Indonesia’s 6th President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Jakarta. It was subsequently inaugurated by Indonesia’s 7th President, Joko Widodo, on 29 May 2015 as the IMIP Industrial Zone.
IMIP operates in the Morowali area, which has been designated as a National Strategic Project (PSN) since 2016 under Presidential Regulation No. 3 Year 2016.

In 2022, IMIP was further designated as a National Strategic Project based on the revision to the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Regulation No. 7 of 2021 concerning the National Strategic Project List (Perubahan atas Peraturan Menteri Koordinator Bidang Perekonomian Nomor 7 Tahun 2021 tentang Perubahan Daftar Proyek Strategis Nasional), signed on 20 July 2022.

According to its website, PT IMIP is a company that manages a nickel-based industrial estate, with main products including nickel, stainless steel, and carbon steel. The IMIP site is located on Jl. Trans Sulawesi, Fatuha Village, Bahodopi District, Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi Province. The company is owned by Shanghai Decent Investment Group (46.69%), PT Sulawesi Mining Investment (25%), and PT Bintang Delapan Investama (25.31%).
