...The miners’ union Sintramienergética, El Carmen de Atrato branch, reports that at the El Roble Mine, owned by the Canadian multinational Atico Mining, unionized workers are being dismissed in order to hire personnel through third parties, undermining job stability and labor rights... Now that the company has everything it needs—another thirty years to continue operating—the abuses are beginning. We saw this coming and reported it during the public hearings before the National Mining Agency, but our labor complaints were ignored; we were brushed off as a nuisance... Nevertheless, we will continue our union work. A conflict is approaching in which we know the company will try to divide us as a community, but their conduct is already well known—this is how transnational companies operate...
