S. Korea: Coupang delivery workers allege reduced delivery zones and income loss following unionisation
“Coupang delivery workers say delivery zones reduced after forming union”, 16 March 2026
Coupang delivery workers have filed a complaint with the Gangwon Regional Office of the Ministry of Employment and Labour, alleging unfair labour practices by a subcontracting agency after facing disadvantages such as reductions in their delivery zones following the establishment of a union.
…
According to the delivery workers’ union on 16 March, a Coupang subcontracting agency in Wonju, Gangwon Province, reduced the delivery zones of two union members on 11 January, after the Coupang Wonju branch of the union was established, citing violations of notices. Their income is reported to have fallen to around one quarter of previous levels.
…
The agency reportedly explained that the zone adjustments were due to providing delivery support without prior reporting. The union claims that similar support had taken place before the branch was established without any sanctions, and that even after its establishment, no such measures were taken against non-union members.
… The union stated that immediately after the branch was formed, the agency manager threw away rice cakes distributed by the union, saying, “You have betrayed me,” and during a meeting reportedly said, “Do you think Coupang will view our agency favourably because of the union?” and “Why didn’t you tell me before joining?”
…
The agency did not provide a separate position regarding the controversy. An agency official told Labor Today, “This is a matter that will proceed according to procedures, and we have no official position.”
