A Global Witness investigation alleges that First Quantum Minerals (FQM) and its associates have conducted a decades-long covert influence campaign in Zambia, including by allegedly providing financial support to President Hakainde Hichilema, while revenues from the country's copper sector have been diverted away from Zambia's heavily indebted economy and its citizens. According to the investigation, FQM, a Canadian mining company with a major office in London, now accounts for more than half of Zambia's copper production and is the country's largest taxpayer. The investigation further alleges that Brenthurst partner SABI Strategy Group, a UK-based corporate lobbying firm that previously worked on the Vote Leave campaign in Britain, has managed Hichilema's social media campaigns since 2015 and targeted Zambian voters through disinformation operations. The Business & Human Rights Centre invited SABI Strategy Group to respond to the allegation that it targeted Zambian voters with disinformation operations. At the time of publication, SABI Strategy Group had not responded.
