DRC: CMOC, Glencore and Zijin Mining linked to severe pollution and health risks around Kolwezi mines, scientific studies document; incl. company response
Following a June 2026 report by RAID, new scientific evidence has exposed industrial-scale air, water, and sediment pollution around major copper and cobalt mines in the DRC's Lualaba Province, revealing toxic concentrations of fine dust and heavy metals that pose severe health risks to local communities. In response to these findings, mining operators Glencore and CMOC engaged with the investigation and provided detailed statements addressing the environmental data. While Zijin Mining initially failed to respond to RAID, it subsequently provided its response to the Business & Human Rights Centre (BHRC).
