Standard Chartered's response to BHRC's new report on remedy in Saudi Arabia

…While confidentiality obligations limit the level of detail we can provide regarding specific projects, we have set out below relevant information regarding our approach to managing environmental and social (E&S) risks…

Following the BHRC's initial correspondence in September last year, our ESRM team undertook a status review of each project with each project having been screened against EP criteria to ensure alignment with the IFC Performance Standards. Independent Environmental and Social Consultants (IESCs) were engaged to prepare Environmental and Social Due Diligence Reports and associated Environmental and Social Action Plans…

…IESCs were also commissioned to undertake regular monitoring on behalf of lenders during construction and, where applicable, operations, to assess ongoing adherence to relevant international standards. In addition to our internal review, the ESRM team engaged directly with the IESCs involved to ensure they were aware of the allegations and maintained an appropriate focus on labour welfare and working conditions…

On one of the projects, standard IESC monitoring had already identified labour-related concerns in 2024, resulting in a separate detailed labour audit by a specialist consultant. This led to the development of corrective action plans…

We will continue to monitor relevant developments and engage with project sponsors, independent consultants and other lenders…
